Because I spent all my Dreamweaver and Photoshop money on Transformers, here's a list of Open-source freeware I use!
KompoZerThe Web-design package I've used to cobble this together. Took twenty minutes, part of which was the download! This used to be Nvu, the project has changed.
GIMP-GNU Image Manipulation ProgramMost of my comics are done in MS Paint, which makes for bad quality.
While not Photoshop, of course, Gimp is a great Graphics Editor, you should see the image quality go up soon. Popeye, above, is an example.
Firefox!I like Firefox a lot, mainly because once you add the Adblock filter, you can really speed up your connection.
This is just a free office suite. Which is to say, if you lack Word, Powerpoint, or Excel, this will give you most of the same functionality, free. Plus some features the non-free stuff lacks, like direct PDF creation.
As the computer world becomes more diverse, it can't hurt to learn about it. Go here to get a Live-CD that'll let you experiment with it WITHOUT having to install it. Also, the Ubuntu Forums are a great place to get help. If you want to reanimate REALLY old equipment, I recomend Puppy Linux instead.
